A Scenic Big Island Road Ride Through Hāmākua Country

Ride from Waimea toward the lush Hāmākua Coast on a challenging and memorable Big Island road bike tour that blends quiet country roads, steady climbing, coastal views, and a visit to one of Hawai‘i Island’s most unique farms.

This approximately 32-mile ride begins with a mostly downhill cruise toward historic Honoka‘a before turning inland for the climb to Pa‘auilo. Along the way, you’ll ride tranquil rural roads lined with coffee groves, fruit trees, open pasture, and sweeping views of the island’s green northern landscape.

At 1,800 feet, we’ll stop at the Hawaiian Vanilla Company, where Hawai‘i-grown vanilla is celebrated in one of the island’s most distinctive farm experiences. Guests can enjoy a farm-to-table vanilla milkshake and learn more about this small-scale agricultural gem tucked into the hills above the Hāmākua Coast.

After our stop, we descend back toward the coast and continue to the Waipi‘o Valley Lookout, also known as the Valley of the Kings. From the overlook, you’ll take in one of the Big Island’s most iconic views: a dramatic valley floor, black sand beach, taro fields, winding river, and towering sea cliffs.
