DAILY TOURS + BIKE RENTALSTHE BIG ISLAND, HAWAI'IABOUT BIG ISLAND BIKE TOURS
Big Island Bike Tours was created to share Hawai‘i Island the way we know it best: from the saddle.
With two 13,000-foot volcanoes, quiet country roads, historic ranchlands, lush uplands, lava fields, rainforest, coastline, and one of the largest national parks in the United States, the Big Island offers some of the most diverse cycling terrain in the world.
Our guided bike tours are designed to help you experience that terrain in a deeper, more personal way. Whether you’re looking for a scenic e-bike ride, a challenging road bike tour, a family-friendly adventure, or a custom mountain bike experience, we’ll help you explore the Big Island with expert support, local knowledge, and the kind of thoughtful planning that lets you simply enjoy the ride.
Guided Bike Tours on Hawai‘i Island
No two riders are exactly the same, and no two Big Island bike tours should be either.
Some guests come to Hawai‘i Island looking for a relaxed way to see more of the landscape. Others want a serious training ride, a custom route, or a full day of climbing, descending, and exploring. We work with your group’s ability level, interests, and goals to create a cycling experience that feels safe, memorable, and just the right amount of adventurous.
From hidden back roads near Waimea to mountain bike routes through ranch country, from Volcanoes National Park to the legendary IRONMAN roads of the Kohala Coast, our tours are built to show you more than the standard visitor route.
We want you to experience the Big Island’s culture, food, natural history, scenic beauty, and incredible riding in a way that feels personal, connected, and unforgettable.
Adventure, Built Around You
The Pro Experience
Our approach is inspired by the support given to riders on a professional cycling team.
On a Big Island Bike Tours ride, the details are handled before you ever have to think about them. Your bike is clean, tuned, sized, and ready. Your bottles are filled. Your snacks are chosen with the ride in mind. Your guide is watching the weather, the route, the pace, the bikes, and the group.
You may not notice the clean towels waiting after a muddy mountain bike ride. You may not notice that your rain bag was placed in the support vehicle before the clouds rolled in. You may not notice the small adjustments made along the way to keep the ride smooth, safe, and fun.
That’s the point.
Our job is to take care of the details so you can focus on riding, looking around, and fully experiencing Hawai‘i Island.
High-Quality Bikes and Equipment
We admit it: we’re bike nerds.
We care about the details — wheel size, suspension, tire choice, gearing, fit, shifting, brakes, and all the small things that can make a ride feel better. Whether you’re riding road, gravel, mountain, or e-bike terrain, you can feel confident leaving your bike at home and riding one of ours.
Our fleet includes high-quality road bikes, mountain bikes, electric mountain bikes, hybrid bikes, and youth bikes from trusted brands like Specialized, Bianchi, Polygon, Liv, and Giant. Every bike is maintained with care so you can enjoy the ride without worrying about the equipment.
Our Sustainability Commitment
We ride bikes for many reasons, and one of them is our belief in a more sustainable way of moving through the world.
Hawai‘i Island is one of the most ecologically unique places on the planet. When guests ride with us, we hope the experience not only helps them connect with this place, but also inspires them to spend more time on a bicycle when they return home.
Big Island Bike Tours is proud to partner with 1% for the Planet. Each fiscal year, we calculate our dues and contribute 1% toward environmental work that helps protect the places we love.
We also recognize that vans and vehicles are sometimes part of tour operations, especially when supporting riders safely across long distances or remote terrain. Whenever possible, we use locally produced biodiesel in our vehicles. It costs more, but we believe using a local product made from recycled vegetable oil is worth it.
The love of bicycles started early.
On a summer morning in 1989, after swim practice and a bowl of cereal, I turned on ABC’s Wide World of Sports just in time to watch Greg LeMond win the Tour de France by only eight seconds — the slimmest margin ever recorded in the race. The drama, the effort, the technology, and the precision of that moment stuck with me. That was when I fell in love with the bicycle.
Years later, cycling became my career. I spent fourteen years racing professionally, competing across the United States and around the world as a criterium specialist, sprinter, team captain, and stage racer. Along the way, I learned what it takes to support riders well: the right equipment, thoughtful planning, smart pacing, and attention to every detail.
Hawai‘i became home along the way. My wife, Hannah, and her family are from Hawai‘i, and today we live on the Big Island with our three sons. During the final years of my racing career, I hosted informal training camps here for teammates, using the island’s warm weather, diverse terrain, quiet roads, and natural beauty as the perfect place to train and explore.
Over time, I rode nearly every road I could find on the Big Island and started dreaming about sharing this place with others from the saddle.
Big Island Bike Tours grew out of that dream: a way to combine professional cycling experience, deep local knowledge, high-quality equipment, and a genuine love for Hawai‘i Island.
Whether you’re here for a serious ride, a family adventure, or a new way to experience the island, we’d love to show you the Big Island the way we see it.
